His work spans the full project lifecycle, from solution selection and implementation through automation, user training and long-term operational support. He has worked with organisations in both the public and private sectors, including financial institutions, government organisations, manufacturers and international enterprises.
Alongside implementation projects, Alain has delivered training, workshops and conference presentations, helping organisations develop the skills needed to make effective and sustainable use of audit analytics and audit management solutions.
As a speaker and trainer, Alain focuses on practical application rather than theory or technology for its own sake. Drawing on real implementation experience, his presentations explore practical approaches to applying audit analytics, continuous control monitoring and modern audit management practices to improve the effectiveness of audit and control functions. His aim is to provide participants with practical ideas and techniques that they can apply within their own organisations.
— 2027 IDEA Workshop Series —
You asked for more IDEA training—and we heard you! Coming in 2027, we’re hosting four hands-on IDEA workshops with Brian Element, covering the topics you’ve asked for: Equation Editor, custom functions, IDEAScript objects, and regular expressions. Choose the workshops that fit your needs and register individually, or bundle all four in one purchase to attend the complete series.

Field of Study: Computer Software & Applications (4.0 CPE)
Program Knowledge: Intermediate
Duration: 4 hours
IDEA Equation Editor Workshop — $300
January 13, 2027 | 9AM – 1PM Eastern US
Workshop Description
This hands-on workshop is for auditors and analysts who use Caseware IDEA daily and want to move beyond basic extractions to build complex expressions in the Equation Editor. Working with IDEA’s sample databases, participants will combine logical operators, nested @If statements, and @functions for text, date, and numeric data to write precise criteria.
Participants will need access to IDEA software.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Construct multi-condition criteria that combine logical operators (.AND., .OR., .NOT.), nested @If statements, and
@functions for text, date, and numeric data to isolate specific records in an IDEA database. - Create virtual and editable fields that derive new values, clean inconsistent data, and flag exceptions for audit follow-up.
- Evaluate and troubleshoot expressions to confirm they return correct results, and correct errors caused by blank values, data type mismatches, and edge cases.

Duration: 4 hours
IDEA Custom Functions Workshop — $300
April 14, 2027 | 9AM – 1PM Eastern US
Workshop Description
This workshop is for IDEA users who work comfortably in the Equation Editor, including those with little or no scripting
experience. You will learn to build custom functions in the Custom Function Editor and call them from the Equation Editor
to handle logic the built-in @functions cannot, such as multi-step conditions, text parsing, and calculations you reuse
across projects. You will need access to IDEA for this workshop and a basic knowledge of programming is an asset.
Participants will need access to IDEA software.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Create a custom function in the Custom Function Editor with defined parameters and a return type.
- Apply custom functions in the Equation Editor to build virtual fields and extraction criteria.
- Test and debug a custom function against sample data to confirm it returns correct results..

Field of Study: Computer Software & Applications (8.0 CPE)
Program Knowledge: Intermediate
Duration: 8 hours, 2 half days
Using the IDEAScript Objects Workshop — $600
July 13, 2027 | 9AM – 1PM Eastern US
July 14, 2027 | 9AM – 1PM Eastern US
Workshop Description
This hands-on workshop is for auditors and analysts who use IDEA daily and have basic IDEAScript experience but havenot yet worked with IDEA’s object model. Using IDEA 14 and its sample databases, participants learn to open and managedatabases through the Client object, read TableDef and Field properties, run extractions, summarizations and joins incode, read records with RecordSet, and add basic error handling. Afterward, they can build scripts that run analysesconsistently and repeatably, producing results that are easier to document, review and rerun in audit and compliance work.
Participants will need access to IDEA software.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Navigate the IDEA object hierarchy from the Client object to open a database and report its table and field properties.
- Construct IDEAScript code that performs extractions, summarizations and joins without using the IDEA menus.
- Apply RecordSet methods to read records and update editable fields, then test and troubleshoot scripts to confirm theyreturn correct results.

Field of Study: Computer Software & Applications (4.0 CPE)
Program Knowledge: Intermediate
Duration: 4 hours
IDEA @RegExpr Workshop — $300
October 13, 2027 | 9AM – 1PM Eastern US
Workshop Description
For IDEA users comfortable with the Equation Editor but new to regular expressions. Using IDEA’s sample databases, youwill write patterns and use @RegExpr to find, extract, and validate text such as postal codes, phone numbers, emails, andinvoice numbers. These skills help you check data quality, isolate inconsistent entries, and spot exceptions in audit work.
Participants will need access to IDEA software.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Construct patterns using character classes, quantifiers, anchors, and groups.
- Apply @RegExpr in virtual fields and criteria to extract or flag matching records.
- Test and refine patterns to reduce false matches and missed records.
