IDEA: Flexibility for Red Flag / Fraud Detection (1.2 CPE)

This session explores how CaseWare IDEA can be leveraged as a flexible and powerful tool for red flag identification and fraud detection in various data sets. Drawing on over 30 years of experience— including real-world case studies with the American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross during COVID-19 — presenters Brian Element and Christine Hoyt walk through their practical journey with IDEA: from initial adoption, to using self-run scripts, to relationship testing, to fully automated continuous monitoring. Attendees will gain, experience-based insights into what worked, what didn’t, and actionable tips for implementing or expanding IDEA-based analytics within their own organizations.

Participants will learn to:

• • Demonstrate IDEA’s flexibility across use cases — describe how CaseWare IDEA and how it can be applied across a range of scenarios, including self-run scripts, relationship/human trafficking reviews, and automated continuous monitoring of 100% of data.

• • Apply practical implementation strategies — identify key success factors and common pitfalls when deploying automated continuous IDEA-based analytics, including data extraction challenges, naming conventions, IT/IS collaboration, and building organizational buy-in.

• • Develop a roadmap for red flag and fraud detection testing — outline a structured approach to designing and scheduling automated red flag testing, including types of tests that can be run.
